Whether this virus will personally harm us or not, social distancing is not about protecting oneself, but about protecting the community. It's about preventing the opportunity for the virus to be spread by people who may not even know they've been exposed. In other words, social distancing is not about protecting myself, it's about protecting the people 6 degrees of separation away from me: the people who know the people who know the people who know the people who know the people who know the people who know me.
Linked below is a great radio episode explaining social distancing, why it's important, and how to do it properly.
We talk about following the example of Christ, who laid down his life for the life of the world. In this moment, Christians have the opportunity to do the same thing: to lay down our lives for the life of the world; not to die, but to set aside our own wants and desires so that the people of the world may be saved from death. Social distancing is not an act of fear: it is the Christ-like thing to do.
