Pastor Tom Tweed, who served at Agnus Dei as pastor from
1990 to 1999, wrote the following about the
congregation's name:
We
are unique among churches in the Evangelical Lutheran
Church in America, being the only one named Agnus Dei
Lutheran. So, is that a distinction and blessing or just
a nuisance since that name is difficult to spell, often
mispronounced, and very seldom understood?
We
believe that the name is what we make of it. It can
certainly speak to some of our strengths. It is a
witness to our biblical and historical tradition in
proclamation to our neighbors, "Look! See the Lamb of
God!" It is a reminder of the commitment, sacrifice and
self-giving that our Savior embodied and invited us to
follow in our discipleship. And it is a celebration of
the worship and communion which unites us and enriches
us for our life of faith.
At
one and the same time the "Lamb of God" becomes our
"Good Shepherd" and not only feeds us but leads us,
shows meekness in order to seek us and dies for us only
to rise in us.
This
is our church name, our identity and calling. Visit us
as we join together to call one another in the name of
the "Lamb of God."
